Band Heritage

Swineshead Silver Band was founded in 1886 although in its formative years it was known as Swineshead Brass Band. The first public playing the band undertook that year was Christmas Carol playing in the village, a tradition that the present band still upholds. The band has had many homes over the years; the first one being the Red Lion Public House and subsequently meetings were held in the Green Dragon, The Elephant and Castle and The Bull.

The band continued to play throughout both world wars and in November 1944 the band took over a room in the Methodist Chapel as a practice room. Finally, in 196O, the band purchased the present band room, a building that had previously been used as a carpenters shop, chicken shed and potato store. The price was £110.

The band is self funding, all monies being raised by subscription, donation or playing fees. The band is active throughout the year playing at garden fetes, indoor concerts, church services, carol concerts and traditional carol playing around the village as well as taking part in local and national brass band contests.
